Throughout the Bible, God uses ordinary men and women to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Their lives were never recorded merely as history; they were preserved to teach future generations how to walk faithfully with Him. Among these remarkable accounts is the story of Queen Vashti and Queen Esther—two women whose lives reveal striking contrasts in character, obedience, humility, and purpose.
Believers today can find timeless lessons from Vashti and Esther as we face the completion of God’s prophecies. The accounts of both women reveal how God has worked in his people’s lives throughout history, especially for women like Ester (and Vashti) who will serve God during the time before Christ’s return.
As we study God’s Word, we want to be careful to interpret Scripture within its written context while allowing for God’s Word to transform the lives of believers through those same word’s unchanging principles. The story of Esthers is more than a fairy tale; it is about the sovereignty of God, the faithfulness of God’s people, and how God is preparing His chosen race for His plans.
God Rules Over Every Generation
The Book of Esther unfolds during a time when God’s covenant people were living in exile. Although His name is never directly mentioned throughout the book, His hand is evident in every event.
Kings make decisions.
Queens rise and fall.
Enemies devise evil plans.
Yet behind every circumstance, God is quietly directing history toward His divine purpose.
This same truth comforts believers today. Although our world faces political uncertainty, moral confusion, technological change, and increasing spiritual darkness, God remains fully sovereign. Nothing happens outside His knowledge or control.
The Lord continues to prepare faithful men and women for His Kingdom.
The Fall of Vashti
Queen Vashti occupied one of the highest positions in the Persian Empire. She possessed beauty, influence, privilege, and authority.
Yet her story reminds us that position alone does not guarantee fulfillment of God’s purpose.
When King Ahasuerus summoned her during the royal banquet, Vashti refused to appear. While the Bible records the event without revealing every motive, the consequences were significant. She lost her royal position, and another would take her place.
By having her removed, God’s purpose was fulfilled:
He will accomplish His purpose with or without individuals’ cooperation or choice of a different way.
Throughout the Bible, there is a clear pattern—pride, self-sufficiency, and disobedience will ultimately lead to loss. God desires us to have a humble, teachable heart and be obedient to Him over our self-interest or cultural expectations.
Today, for believers in Jesus, Queen Vashti is an example of how to be a good follower of Jesus by influencing those around you but not submitting yourself to God’s plan.
Esther’s Rise
Where Vashti’s story ends, Esther’s begins.
Esther was a young Jewish woman living far from the center of political power. She possessed neither status nor influence when her story began.
Yet God had been preparing her all along.
Her humility, wisdom, patience, and willingness to follow godly counsel distinguished her character long before she became queen.
When the moment of crisis arrived and the Jewish people faced destruction, Esther understood that her position was not for personal comfort but for divine purpose.
She courageously approached the king, risking her own life to save God’s people.
Her trust in God’s sovereignty was absolute and total in her faith and that should also inspire fellow believers that it is not fame, but faithfulness as God’s word indicates, that is true greatness.
A Model for Modern Day Women
The Bible also tells us that as the “end times” approach, there will be increased deception, spiritual compromise and moral ambiguity. Regardless of this increase, God will continue to raise women who exhibit godly character and exhibit strong faith through the end times.
As Christians, women are now called by God to be like Esther to:
· Live with humility before God.
· Build lives upon Scripture rather than culture.
· Develop spiritual discernment through prayer.
· Influence families and communities with godly wisdom.
· Courageously stand for biblical truth.
· Serve others with love, compassion, and integrity.
God is not primarily looking for popularity, appearance, or worldly success. He seeks hearts fully surrendered to Him.
What Was In the Beginning
Many people today think of their self-worth in terms of how they appear to others based on how they dress, their popularity level, and their overall social status.
However, God’s Word tells us that true beauty begins inside with a changed heart.
Scripture demonstrates the importance of displaying those same characteristics that God desires to see in all His children.
Scriptures encourage believers to demonstrate the following fruit:
– Humility
– Faith
– Purity
– Wisdom
– Kindness
– Obedience
– Reverence for God
These characteristics last through time and generations.
Esther’s primary strength lies in her inner character created through faith, not her outward beauty.
Likewise, Christian women of today are called to reflect their faith in Christ, by living their lives in purity instead of seeking the approval of the world.
Standing Firm During Spiritual Warfare
The last days require believers to exercise greater spiritual discernment than ever before.
False teachings, cultural pressure, and worldly philosophies constantly seek to influence God’s people.
Women play a vital role in strengthening families, discipling children, encouraging churches, and proclaiming the Gospel.
Like Esther, believers must recognize that every opportunity God provides carries responsibility.
Prayer, biblical study, worship, and faithful discipleship prepare God’s people to remain steadfast regardless of changing circumstances.
Victory comes not through human strength but through complete dependence upon God.
God’s Purpose Is Greater Than Personal Comfort
One of the most memorable truths from Esther’s life is the realization that she had been placed in her position “for such a time as this.”
Although these words were spoken thousands of years ago, the principle remains relevant today.
God places believers exactly where they can best serve His Kingdom.
Whether serving in ministry, raising families, teaching, leading businesses, studying, or sharing the Gospel within local communities, every Christian has a divine assignment.
The question is not whether God has a purpose.
The question is whether we are willing to faithfully embrace it.
